Booze and Brew Favorite Coffee Liqueur

My Favorite Coffee Liqueur – by Jonah Engler

I love coffee liqueur. It combines my two favorite drinks: coffee, and booze! What’s not to like?

There are many types of coffee liqueurs on the market; below, I have broken down some of my favorites.

Kahlúa Original Coffee Liqueur

Kahlúa is the go-to coffee liqueur for many. It contains rum, coffee, vanilla, and sugar. The sugar and vanilla help balance that strong coffee taste. It contains 20% alcohol content. According to Kahlúa’s website, it can take seven years to make one bottle of Kahlúa! Most of this time is spent harvesting the Arabica coffee beans. It only takes me a couple of weeks to get through one bottle, but, seven years is still worth it. It is sweeter than Tia Maria, so if I’m mixing in other alcohols to create a really potent cocktail, I would use Kahlúa.

Tia Maria

Tia Maria is made with Jamaican rum, vanilla, and coffee. It also contains 20% alcohol content. It’s less sweet than Kahlúa, which makes it smoother to drink because it’s not overpoweringly sweet. If I’m not making a cocktail and I’m just trying to drink coffee liqueur straight, I would opt for Tia Maria. Jamaica truly makes the best rum, and Tia Maria is proof of that.

Sheridan’s Coffee Liqueur

I LOVE the bottle. It’s aesthetically pleasing as the coffee and cream are in two separate compartments in the bottle. It contains 15.5% alcohol content, so it’s not as strong as Tia Maria and Kahlúa. There are two different nozzles on the bottle cap, so, in theory, you could cover one side of the bottle if you only want the coffee or the cream. I wouldn’t recommend this approach – it’s meant to be combined. But, to each their own! Sheridan’s contains coffee and whiskey on one side and white milk chocolate liqueur on the other side. Yum.

Patron XO Café (the Jonah Engler choice)

Patron XO Café is made of Patrón Silver Tequila and coffee. If you prefer tequila to whiskey or rum, you will find this coffee liqueur more enjoyable. It is stronger and less sweet than other liqueurs. The tequila is of high quality, so it is a different experience. It contains 35% alcohol content, making it much stronger than any of the other options. While you don’t need a chase or mixer to enjoy this drink, it might help it go down smoother!

Bailey’s Irish Cream

Bailey’s is an Irish whiskey mixed with coffee-flavored cream. I love Bailey’s because the taste is reminiscent of Kahlúa, but it’s much more comfortable to drink. It goes down smoothly. Bailey’s is nice to add to your coffee hot or cold. One thing I like to do is make frozen iced coffee and top it off with Bailey’s. There are now multiple flavors as well: Original, Strawberries & Cream, Almond Milk, and more. If you’re vegan, this one’s for you.

The Final Verdict

Which coffee liqueur I buy depends on the occasion or the mood I am in. But, if I had to choose just one coffee liqueur for the rest of time, I would select Tia Maria. It’s a well-rounded, full-bodied drink and I like how it’s not too sweet, giving you a choice as to whether you want to make it sweeter. As such, it’s more versatile for cocktails. And, it just tastes great. Happy drinking (safely)!

Thanks!

Favorite Coffee Chains

I love coffee, and I prefer to make it on my own in a French press. However, if I am hard-pressed for time, I have a few preferences which guide me to certain coffee chains. Here are some of Jonah Engler‘s favorite chains for when I need a quick cup of joe!

Dunkin’ (hands down the Jonah Engler choice for the common brands)

While I find the coffee can be watered down depending on the barista, I love the variety of flavor options. A huge bonus is a fact that I can opt for a sugar-free flavor addition if I don’t want such a sweet drink. Dunkin’ is excellent because there are few curated drinks on the menu so that you can order coffee to your exact specifications. Like Starbucks, it’s famous around the States, so it’s convenient and easy to find. Another huge plus is that the prices are more reasonable than other coffee chains. My go-to order is a sugar-free hazelnut iced coffee with skim milk and light ice. Talk about a complicated order.

Starbucks

I don’t love Starbucks coffee. I really don’t. The coffee, without any syrupy additions, tastes burnt. The beans aren’t quality, and the final product is overpriced. But, the one thing I love about Starbucks is its convenience. I can find a Starbucks on almost every street corner where I live. I can also order ahead of time online with an easy-to-use app. It is a very convenient option when I am in a rush and need a quick pick me up. My favorite drink is the “Cinnamon Dolce Latte.” It has such a warm, autumnal taste. It’s the perfect drink for the fall when it gets cold outside.

Tim Horton’s

Timmies is famous for being Canadian. After all, it was created by Canadian hockey star Tim Horton. But few people know there are shops in the US too. Timmies is often thought of as a donut shop. I don’t like their coffee; the taste is not great, and it’s not full-bodied enough for my liking. But, if I have a sweet tooth, I will go to Tim Horton’s for an “Iced Capp.” It’s very sweet, very creamy, and very slushy. An iced cap is a frozen cappuccino drink made with cream (although you can opt for milk), resulting in a coffee I would drink for dessert rather than for the caffeine. You will get double the energy in comparison to a regular coffee because it will come with a significant sugar high, followed by a steep sugar crash. You’ve been warned.

Peets Coffee

Peet’s coffee is quality coffee. I drink the coffee black because it tastes good on its own. Their espresso beverages are delicious too. They brew their coffee every 30 minutes, so it tastes fresh every time I go. I really can’t complain about any drink on the menu. It’s just good coffee.

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

My favorite thing about this shop is the ice. I love the ice. It’s not cubed, it’s not crushed, it’s somewhere in between. When I go to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, I drink without straw because the ice is small enough that it doesn’t give you brain freeze and you can bite with ease, but large enough that the drink isn’t grainy or slushy. My favorite drink is the iced vanilla latte – the vanilla flavor doesn’t taste so synthetic, so it’s more subtle than a vanilla latte at Starbucks. The coffee there is easy to drink, easy to enjoy, and one of my favorites.

Coffee to close

So, there you have it! If I had to choose one chain to go to, it would probably be Dunkin’ because of the prices, the choices, and the convenience. But, new chains are opening up daily and I, for one, am excited to try them all!

Thanks,

Jonah Engler

COFFEE TALK: A guide to schmoozing your colleagues with coffee fun facts

Who needs pillow talk when you can have the coffee talk?

Single origin? Arabica? Robusta? Before I did my research, I thought Arabica just meant Arabian coffee (it doesn’t). So, what does it all really mean? Hold onto your joe, folks. I’m about to add a little sugar to your coffee. And that sugar isn’t stevia – it’s knowledge.

Country of Origin:

A lot of factors can affect the quality of your coffee. Soil, climate, shade, geographical region; these all have an effect on the bean you roast and the coffee you taste. In terms of origin, popular choices for coffee include Colombian, Ethiopian, and Indonesian.

Colombian coffee is a popular choice because it produces 100% Arabica beans.[1] Also, every coffee bean in the country is picked by hand.[2]

Ethiopian coffee is popular because of its full body and complex flavor, with sweet, fruity notes.[3]

Indonesia is known for Sumatran coffee, which comes from the island of Sumatra. I find it to be creamy and almost chocolatey. Delicious!

Colleagues with Coffee fun

Coffee Terms:

Arabica: This bean’s caffeine content is around 1.5% and has higher sugar content in comparison to Robusta, making it less bitter, and more popular.[4]

Cappuccino: Espresso combined with milk and foam.

Cold brew: Coffee brewed with room/cold temperature water, which makes the coffee stronger than conventional methods of brewing.[5]

Dark roast: Less acidic. This roast takes away from the taste of the bean because it takes on more flavor from the roasting process. It also has higher oil content and less caffeine than light roast.[6]

Decaffeinated: Coffee with very low caffeine content.

Double-double: Any Canadians in the room? A double-double means double milk, double sugar. This is a common order at Tim Hortons.

Espresso: This process forces hot water through dense, pressed coffee. The pressure makes for a small amount of concentrated coffee, often served in the form of a shot.[1] The method used in preparing espresso is known as pulling.[2]

Fair trade: Fair trade is a private program, providing certification for products like tea, clothing, coffee, chocolate, etc. A fair trade product is advertised as ethical and conscious. This program ensures that farmers or distributors are paid an ethical amount for their products in an effort to create a sustainable market.[3]

French press: A type of coffee made with a plunger, filter, and coarse ground coffee (a Jonah Engler favorite!).

Light roast: More acidic. The beans roast for less time, so the resulting taste stays true to the taste of the beans flavor. Light roast has more caffeine than dark roast.[4]

Medium roast: Somewhere in between light roast and medium roast. Balanced in acidity, and has elements of flavor from the original bean and the roasting process.

Pour-over: A type of coffee prepared by pouring hot water over ground coffee and letting the liquid drip through the filter into your cup.

Ristretto: Coffee made in with shorter brewing time, resulting in sweeter coffee.[5]

Robusta: This bean’s caffeine content is much higher than Arabica at 2.7%. It also has less sugar. As such, it tends to be more bitter and less popular than Arabica.[6]

Single origin: This coffee comes from one specific geographic location.

Different kinds of meditation techniques

Meditation offers a lot of benefits to the mind and body, and is considered a healing practice that can improve the quality of day-to-day life.  A lower blood pressure, lower heart rate, improved blood circulation, slower respiratory rate, and a deeper relaxation are only some of the benefits meditation can offer.  There are different kinds of meditation to suit all needs, and here are examples of some.

Concentration meditation.  This kind of meditation focuses on a single point. It follows the breath, and repeats a single word mantra.  It can also entail staring at a candle flame or listening to repetitive sound of the gong, or counting beads on a mala.  When the mind wanders, you can gain back your awareness on your chosen object of attention.

Mindfulness meditation.  Mindfulness meditation allows you to be fully preset with your thoughts.  Through this kind of meditation, it makes you aware of what you’re doing and not being too sensitive on what’s going on around you.  It also lets you observe your emotions and thoughts as they pass without judgment.  It could be done anywhere, at anytime.

Transcendental meditation.  A simple technique with a personally assigned mantra, transcendental meditation is practiced 20 minutes twice each day.  The assigned mantra could be a sound, a word, or a small phrase, and is repeated in a specific way.  The idea behind this kind of meditation is allowing the self to settle inwards to a profound state of rest and relaxation leading to inner peace.

As a parent and teacher, Jonah Engler ensures the balance in his life by practicing the art of mindfulness.  Some of his hobbies are cooking, meditating, and other healing activities that refresh the mind and body.   To unwind, he enjoys shows like “This is Us” and movies like the “Back to the Future” series.  For more articles like this, visit this page.
